The Superior A's
An active Model A Ford club located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
A review of the clubs activities for 2021.
In February, when we were "snowed in" and our indoor meetings were canceled due to covid concerns, Bob and Rose got the year started for us by cruising to the mountains for some warm Arizona fresh air. Maybe they could host our winter meetings.
Dick made good use of the winter in completing his latest restoration project, a 1929 "woody".
It look's like he's wondering if they will be able to have this finished for summer driving.
A few "A's" were out for our first meeting of 2021, in April, on a fairly cold spring day. Some cars haven't come out of winter storage.
The weather wasn't too warm, notice the clothing, but it was great to finally be able to have a meeting in 2021. The usual winter indoor meetings were all cancelled due to covid.
The first "2nd Tuesday" club ride in 2021 was to the Michigamme Museum. Participants had a tour of the Museum's new building and enjoyed a beautiful day to be out cruising, especially for an early May drive.
Norm's prototype roof worked out so well he was moved to the front of the line. At least he doesn't have to hold on to an umbrella when it starts to rain now.
A nice sunny day and a better turn out of Model A's and members for the May meeting at the Cliff's Shaft Museum.
Dick's restoration was completed for summer driving and it certainly brought about a lot of attention at the meeting.
A very unfortunate accident occurred as Norm returned home from the May meeting. A lady drove through a stop sign as Norm was driving home and caused the collision. Fortunately there were no serious injuries.
Bob and Jim's cars are ready to head out on another section of the trip to Oshkosh, Wisconsin for the MARC National Convention
Bob, Jim, and Dan's cars at the hotel in Oshkosh. A good trip with no problems.
The ladies are enjoying a sunny day at the convention but Im not sure if the discussion is about all the nice cars or shopping opportunities.
Even when they're all running, Dan figure's the Hill's Garage pickup can be tweeked a little.
Everyone enjoyed a social gathering at the convention banquet. Dan told the group about his collection of convention posters but I haven't yet seen one from this year.
The east and west members meet at the 480/35 crossroads for the June drive. The weather was perfect for an early summer cruise.
On the warm sunny June day, John W. leaves the enclosed "A" at home and joins the group with his beautiful '34. Top down of course.
The group parks in Gwinn at the Up North Lodge for a meal at the midpoint of the June cruise.
An enjoyable meal and visit during the June drive. The return trip was without problems as well.
Twenty eight members but only four "A's" showed up for the June meeting at Norm's.
A group of members stayed after the June meeting to begin tearing down Norm's pickup. Norm learned to drive in this pickup and doesn't want to let it go, so the club is helping to get it back in shape for him to drive again.
A few of the Superior A's from the west end meet at Bob's house before heading to Marquette for Greg's celebration of life.
Some of the cars that showed up during the day to celebrate Greg's life. Three of Greg's restorations are shown at the end of the line on the right in the photo below.
Greg's 28 roadster pickup was a familiar sight as it led area 4th of July Parades for 36 years where he and the Exchange Club passed out more than 100,000 American Flags.
A lot of stories and fond memories shared. A fitting tribute to a great man. Rest in peace Greg.
A good turnout of Superior A's at the ice cream social in support of the Negaunee Museum.
The cars draw a lot of interest. Always a fun activity for the Club.
Model A's parked in Chatham for a meal during the July club run. (above and below)
Bill's unique "A" drew some attention on it's first club run. While there were a few stops and "bugs" to deal with, the drive was successful. We're looking forward to seeing it on more gatherings.
Club members enjoy a meal and visit in Chatham before the return drive. The club runs are becoming a highlight of club activities.
A good turnout for the July meeting at Norm's. Ten "A's" showed up and mixed in with the "moderns"
August 1, Norm grabs his favorite tool for the project. The dismantling is almost done.
The west end group meeting at Al Quaal for the August 10th drive to Big Bay.
"A's" at the Big Bay Park. A good drive without any problems.
Everyone brought their own box lunch along for the trip. A perfect way to dine when out with the "A's".
Club member Mike K welcomed the club for a visit at his home. The highlight of the trip. Thanks Mike.
I know they don't remember the dairy but that didn't interfere with the fun. The drive back home with the A's went well. Another great day.
August 24th - Another work-bee. Norm's pickup finally stripped down and ready to go to the body shop for some frame straightening.
August 30th The pickup back in Norm's garage with a straight frame and some parts ready for reassembly.
A late arrival at the August meeting looking for a place to park.
A great showing of A's for the August meeting at Cliff's Shaft. Rudy spots a place in the lineup to park his original woody.
Lot's of interest in the car and advice for Rudy. Expert mechanic John, in his shop coat, oversees the discussion.
A smaller group of A's with some moderns tagging along for the September drive to Lakenenland on a cold rainy day.
Just a few of the many displays.
Despite the weather a nice drive and a great visit to Lakenenland. If you haven't visited, gather up your kids and grandkids for a visit. You will all enjoy it. Thanks for hosting us.
September meeting at the Cliffs Shaft Museum. I don't know what car is arriving but it seems to have everyones attention.
A good turnout with lots of time to visit outside before the September meeting.
At the end of summer, Bob's "A" had a leaking head gasket that needed to be replaced. He tried every trick, commercial puller and suggestion he could find to remove the head with no success until Jim M. came through with his heavy duty homemade puller. (Pictured below) The car is back on the road for the October club run. Thanks Jim
A cool day with some sporadic rain but a small group is ready for an October drive to Gwinn.
All cars accounted for as we arrived in Gwinn. The Gwinn Museum is in a building to the left and that's where we were headed.
A very nice museum with a lot of local history. It's certainly worth a visit. Thank you to the museum for hosting us and Frank P. for setting everything up.
On the road home with one in the rearview mirror. We once again enjoyed the monthly drive and are looking to continue this in 2022.
A good turnout of members and Model A's in October for our final meeting of the year. Even with the covid restrictions, and some cancelations, the club managed to be fairly active in 2021
Jim and Floyd at a late October work-bee on Norm's truck. Front axle rebuilt and ready for installation. More work to come next spring.
